Employee cost calculator: what a hire in Bangladesh really costs
This is the employee cost calculator Bangladesh employers and foreign investors can run before they make an offer. Enter a monthly salary and it returns the annual employer cost, the on-cost over gross pay, the estimated salary tax to withhold and the cost of each way out after the years of service you choose. Every rate comes from the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006 as amended in 2026, the Labour Rules 2015 or the Income Tax Act 2023, and every line cites its source.
What will this hire cost each year?
Enter the salary and choose the benefits you offer. Inputs marked as an assumption are choices, not law. The results update as you type.
1 · Salary
Both sit inside gross. House rent, medical, conveyance and other allowances make up the rest.
2 · Employee
3 · Benefits and assumptions
Rule 111(5): two a year after one year's continuous service, each not more than one month's basic wage. Paying the full ceiling is market practice.
Rule 107(2) allows up to half of unspent earned leave to be cashed, once a year.
Section 108: 2 times basic, dearness allowance and ad hoc wage. The Act fixes no divisor; 208 is 48 hours x 52 weeks / 12.
Applies if, on the last day of the accounting year, paid-up capital is at least Tk 1 crore or permanent assets are at least Tk 2 crore. A foreign company's branch is tested on the branch's own capital and assets. The company pays 5 per cent of net profit, split 80:10:10, within 9 months of year end.

Salary tax withholding: an estimate
Salary tax is the employee's liability, but the employer must deduct it from each payment. The figures use the 2026-27 slabs for residents and non-resident Bangladeshi citizens.
Exit costs after 5 years
Excludes EPZ establishments. Export processing zones apply the Bangladesh EPZ Labour Act 2019, which this calculator does not model. This is an estimate, not advice. Figures use the rates in force on 25 October 2026 under the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006 as amended by Act No 43 of 2026; contracts, service rules, sector wage boards and the facts of an exit can change the answer.
What the calculator adds to salary
Most of the cost of employing someone in Bangladesh is priced off the basic wage, not the gross salary. Festival bonuses are capped at one month's basic wage, provident fund contributions are a percentage of basic, overtime runs at twice basic and dearness allowance, and since Act No 43 of 2026 the wage for every exit payment is the last monthly basic wage plus dearness allowance and any ad hoc or interim wage. That is why the first input in this employee cost calculator Bangladesh payroll teams use is the split between basic and allowances. You can enter gross pay with a basic percentage, or type the basic wage and each allowance separately.
The annual table starts from twelve months of gross salary and adds each employer cost line. Two festival bonuses follow rule 111(5) of the Labour Rules 2015. The provident fund match applies only if you run a fund. Gratuity accrues only where a contract, service rules or a scheme provide for it, and is shown as an annual accrual so that the exit bill is budgeted from the first year. Leave encashment and overtime are budget assumptions, valued on the divisors shown beside them. Group insurance, the workers' participation fund and the work permit fee appear only when you switch them on.
With the defaults, a Tk 1,00,000 gross salary with 50 per cent basic, an 8 per cent provident fund match, a gratuity scheme, five days' leave encashment and ten hours' overtime a month, the employee cost calculator Bangladesh finance teams rely on gives the same answer as the worked example in our guide to the cost of hiring in Bangladesh: Tk 14,72,359 a year, or 22.7 per cent over gross. Change any input and the table, tax and exit panels update at once.
Maternity benefit is shown under the table but left out of the total, because it is contingent: 120 days, 60 before and 60 after childbirth, at the most recently fixed gross monthly wage divided by 26, for a woman with at least 6 months' service and fewer than two surviving children. On Tk 1,00,000 gross that is about Tk 4,61,538.
Rules, practice and choices, labelled
Inside the employee cost calculator Bangladesh employers see here, each input carries a label. "Rule" means the figure is set by law. "Market practice" and "calculator assumption" mean it is a convention you can change. "Your assumption" means only you know the answer.
Basic share of gross
Your choice in the appointment letter, defaulting to 50 per cent. Moving basic from 50 to 70 per cent raises the bonus, provident fund, gratuity and overtime lines by 40 per cent, and every exit payment with them.
Your assumptionFestival bonus amount
Rule 111(5) sets a ceiling of one month's basic wage for each of the two bonuses. Paying the full ceiling is market practice, so it is the default, but you can model less or more.
Market practice; Labour Rules 2015, r 111(5)Provident fund rate
Only where a fund exists. The Act sets 7 to 8 per cent of basic unless otherwise agreed, matched by the employer. The default is 8 per cent.
BLA s 264Gratuity after ten years
Section 2(10) gives 30 days' wages per completed year, or part over six months, and 45 days' wages for service of more than ten years, without saying whether 45 days applies to every year or only to later years. Choose the reading.
Calculator option; BLA s 2(10)Overtime and leave divisors
The Act fixes no hourly divisor. The calculator uses 208 hours a month for overtime and values a leave day at gross divided by 30, as in our worked example. Your service rules should state both.
Calculator assumptionDaily wage on exit
Exit compensation is counted in days' wages. Following the worked example, a day is the monthly exit wage divided by 30, so 120 days' notice equals four months' wages.
Calculator assumption; BLA s 14 as replacedWPPF, group insurance and the provident fund
Three costs depend on the company, not the employee, so the employee cost calculator Bangladesh employers use leaves them off by default. The workers' participation fund under Chapter XV applies where, on the last day of the accounting year, paid-up capital is at least Tk 1 crore or permanent assets are worth at least Tk 2 crore. A foreign company is tested on the capital and fixed assets of its Bangladesh branch. The company must set up the funds within a month of qualifying and pay 5 per cent of net profit, in the ratio 80:10:10, to the participation fund, the welfare fund and the Bangladesh Workers' Welfare Foundation Fund within 9 months of the year end.
Beneficiaries need 9 months' service and exclude the employer, partners and management board members. In 100 per cent export-oriented sectors a central sector fund applies instead. The payment is deductible for tax up to 5 per cent of disclosed net profit. The calculator turns your profit estimate into a per-head figure for budgeting; the 2026 changes to how the fund is distributed are not modelled.
Group insurance against death and permanent incapacity is compulsory from 100 permanent workers under section 99 and rule 98. The employer pays the premium, cannot deduct it from wages, and claims must be settled within 120 days. No statutory premium rate exists, so enter your insurer's quotation. A provident fund is optional for most employers, but replaced section 264 makes one compulsory where there are at least 100 permanent workers and two-thirds of them demand it in writing. The employer is exempt if it lets interested workers join the Progoti universal pension scheme, with employer and worker each paying 50 per cent of the contribution.
Reading the exit panel
Every route out of permanent employment carries a statutory payment, and the exit panel in the employee cost calculator Bangladesh HR teams use prices four of them at the service length you enter. Termination by the employer without cause under section 26 needs 120 days' written notice for a monthly-rated permanent worker, or 60 days otherwise, or pay in lieu, plus 30 days' wages for every completed year. Retrenchment under section 20 needs a year's continuous service, one month's notice or pay in lieu and 30 days' wages per year.
A resigning permanent worker now receives, per full year, 7 days' wages up to three years' service, 15 days from over three to under ten, and 30 days or gratuity, whichever is higher, from ten years. A worker dismissed or removed after a year's service receives 15 days' wages per completed year, unless the misconduct is theft, fraud, dishonesty, riot, arson or vandalism.
Two rules shape the numbers. First, the wage is the 2026 exit wage: last monthly basic wage, dearness allowance and any ad hoc or interim wage, not gross pay. Second, where a gratuity is payable, the employer pays the higher of gratuity and statutory compensation, not both. The panel shows which one wins. Unused earned leave is added to every route, dismissal included, under section 11, and the provident fund balance is paid out under the fund rules.
All dues must be paid within 30 working days. Under the management-role setting the figures become benchmarks, because a person given managerial, administrative or supervisory responsibility in writing falls outside the statutory definition of worker and the contract governs. Our guide to severance pay in Bangladesh covers the procedure.
Withholding and work permits
Section 86 of the Income Tax Act 2023 requires the employer to deduct tax from each salary payment at the average rate on the employee's estimated income from employment. For residents and non-resident Bangladeshi citizens in 2026-27, income is tax-free up to Tk 4,00,000 for general taxpayers and Tk 4,50,000 for women and those aged 65 or over, then taxed at 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 per cent in bands, with minimum tax of Tk 5,000.
The employee cost calculator Bangladesh tax panel adds salary, bonuses, overtime and leave encashment, applies the slabs and divides by twelve. It applies no standard deduction, exemption or investment rebate, so treat it as an upper estimate and confirm with your payroll provider.
Switch on the foreign national setting and the calculator adds the published work permit fee of Tk 5,000 per person per year, the same for a new permit or an extension, and lets you tax a non-resident foreigner at the flat 30 per cent rate. Invest Bangladesh has operated since 23 August 2026 and inherited the One Stop Service from BIDA, so confirm the fee before relying on it. Branch, liaison and joint-venture offices and wholly foreign-owned companies must also show USD 50,000 of inward remittance, a company-level condition rather than a cost per employee.
