Why it matters now

Bangladesh work permit

Every foreign national working for a company in Bangladesh needs a Bangladesh work permit, and since 23 August 2026 that permit is administered by Invest Bangladesh, the authority formed under the Invest Bangladesh Act 2026 from the merger of BIDA, BEZA and the PPP Authority [1]. Applications still run through the One Stop Service, where a new permit, an extension, an amendment and a cancellation are separate filings, each with its own document list, fee and service time [2]. The expatriate is expected to apply within 15 days of arriving in Bangladesh [3], so the clock starts before most employers have finished onboarding.

The step that most often catches employers out is security clearance. From 1 October 2025, security clearance applications for work permits must be filed only through the One Stop Service portal [7]. Clearance is treated as granted if no objection is raised within 21 working days, but if the application is not made within the timeframe stated in the work permit, the permit is automatically cancelled [6]. A missed window therefore does not lead to a late fee. It leads to a cancelled permit, a foreign employee who cannot lawfully keep working and a fresh application.

Permits are normally issued for one year at a time, with extensions generally allowed up to five years in total [4], and the government has said it is tightening monitoring of foreign workers who stay beyond five years by moving between companies in the same group [8]. Each extension needs a fresh set of papers, including the expatriate's income tax clearance, an up-to-date encashment certificate and a statement of local and foreign staff [5]. With several expatriates on different cycles, a shared calendar is rarely enough to keep every filing on time.

What is included

What our bangladesh work permit service includes

01Bangladesh work permit filings

Preparing and submitting new permit, extension, amendment and cancellation applications on the Invest Bangladesh One Stop Service, with every document checked against the published list before filing, and following each application through the inter-ministerial committee.

02Security clearance filing and follow-up

Filing each security clearance application inside the window stated in the permit, monitoring the 21-working-day period, and answering any query or objection raised by the home ministry or security agencies promptly.

03Deadline register for every expatriate

A register shared with your HR team showing arrival dates, clearance windows, permit and visa expiry dates and tax clearance dates for each foreign employee, with written reminders sent well before each internal cut-off.

04Visa recommendation and visa alignment

Coordinating the visa recommendation letter for new hires and checking that each employee's visa type and expiry match the permit, so an extension is not undermined by an expired visa or the wrong visa category.

05Cancellation and exit filings

When an expatriate resigns, transfers or leaves Bangladesh, preparing the cancellation application with the tax clearances, release letter and departure evidence, so the company's record with the authority stays clean.

06Quarterly compliance note

A short written note each quarter listing upcoming deadlines, procedural changes announced by Invest Bangladesh or the immigration authorities, and any gaps found in the company's expatriate files, with the action needed to close each gap.

How it works

Bangladesh work permit, step by step

  1. Intake and file auditAt the start

We review each expatriate's passport, visa, current permit, clearance status and tax papers, confirm which filings are due, and flag any permit already at risk because a window has passed or a required document is missing.

  2. Build the deadline registerAt the start

We enter every arrival, clearance, permit and visa date into a register shared with your HR team, agree who receives reminders, and set internal cut-off dates that leave time to collect signatures, board resolutions and tax certificates.

  3. File each Bangladesh work permit applicationAs each date falls due

We prepare and submit new, extension, amendment or cancellation applications on the One Stop Service. Invest Bangladesh lists 16 working days for a new permit, subject to committee approval, and 3 days for an amendment or cancellation [2].

  4. File and track security clearanceWithin the window in each permit

We file the clearance application on the portal within the period stated in the permit, monitor the 21-working-day period in which objections can be raised [6], and respond quickly to any query so the permit is not cancelled.

  5. Review and reportMonthly and quarterly

We send a written update on every filing, refresh the register after each approval, and issue the quarterly compliance note so your team and your regional office can see the position for every expatriate at a glance.

Fixed fee per filing or monthly subscription

You can choose a fixed fee for each filing, or a monthly subscription that covers the deadline register, reminders, quarterly notes and an agreed number of filings. The price depends on the number of expatriates, how many permits fall due and whether existing files need repair. Official fees are passed through at cost, and the fee is confirmed in writing before work starts.

We confirm the fee in writing before any work starts. Government fees, court fees and stamp duty are passed through at cost.

Questions

Bangladesh work permit: questions

Who issues a Bangladesh work permit now that BIDA has merged?

Invest Bangladesh. The Invest Bangladesh Act 2026 merged BIDA, BEZA and the PPP Authority, and the new authority began operating on 23 August 2026 [1]. Work permit applications for commercial offices and companies continue to be filed through the One Stop Service and are approved by an inter-ministerial committee [2][3]. The published fee for a new permit is BDT 5,000 per individual per year, paid online [2]. References to BIDA on older guidance should now be read as references to Invest Bangladesh (formerly BIDA).

What happens if security clearance is not applied for in time?

The permit is automatically cancelled if the security clearance application is not made within the timeframe stated in the work permit [6]. Since 1 October 2025 the application can be made only through the One Stop Service portal, and clearance is treated as granted if no objection is raised within 21 working days [7]. The number of documents required was cut from 34 to 11 when the process went online [8], which makes on-time filing easier, but the window itself has not been relaxed.

How long does a Bangladesh work permit last?

A foreign national is normally granted a permit for one year at first, with extensions generally allowed up to five years in total [4]. Extensions carry a BDT 5,000 fee and a published service time of 16 working days, subject to inter-ministerial committee approval [5]. The government has said that, as a general rule, no foreign worker should be employed in Bangladesh for more than five years, and that it is tightening checks on people who move between group companies to stay longer [8].

When should a new expatriate apply after arriving?

Invest Bangladesh (formerly BIDA) guidance says the expatriate must apply within 15 days of arriving in Bangladesh, and the employing company or office must itself be registered with the authority [3]. Employees normally hold an E type visa and investors a PI type visa [5], and a visa recommendation letter is part of the document set for a new permit [2]. We recommend preparing the papers before the employee travels so the application can go in during the first week.

What does the monthly subscription cover compared with a per-filing fee?

A per-filing fee suits a company with one or two expatriates and occasional filings. The monthly subscription suits employers with several foreign staff: it covers the shared deadline register, written reminders before each cut-off, the quarterly compliance note and an agreed number of filings each year, with any extra filings charged at the agreed rate. In both cases government fees are passed through at cost and the scope and fee are confirmed in writing before work starts.

Can you handle the cancellation when an employee leaves?

Yes. A cancellation is filed on the One Stop Service with the first and latest permits, the company's and the expatriate's tax clearances, the resignation or transfer letter, the board resolution or release letter, the passport showing the latest departure seal and the air ticket [2]. Invest Bangladesh lists no fee and a service time of 3 days for cancellations [2]. Closing the file properly matters if the same employee later joins another Bangladesh company.
