Legal tools: Bangladesh law, built for a global audience

TRW's legal tools turn Bangladesh law into answers you can use: which licences your investment needs, which laws changed and when, how to run a case from abroad, what to do when officials arrive, every filing deadline in your calendar, and how a case moves through the courts. How they are built

Built from the law, checked by lawyers

Each of these legal tools starts from primary sources: the Acts, ordinances, rules and gazette notifications of Bangladesh, the rules of the Supreme Court, the circulars of Bangladesh Bank and the National Board of Revenue, and the official pages of the authorities that apply them. Where a point depends on a press report or cannot be confirmed from an official text, the tool says so rather than guessing.

Before publication every tool is reviewed by a second lawyer who did not write it. The reviewer checks each section number, date, deadline, fee and authority against the source, corrects what is wrong and removes what cannot be supported. Each tool shows the date it was last updated, and the regulatory tracker and compliance calendar are refreshed as the law changes.

The tools are written for four audiences. Foreign investors and multinationals use the investor guide, the approvals navigator and the regulatory tracker to plan entry into Bangladesh. Bangladeshis living abroad use the country desk and the Case Journeys to run a matter from wherever they live. Compliance and finance teams use the compliance calendar and the raids guide. Litigants and their families use the Case Journeys, the Dhaka Court Guide and the glossary to understand where a case stands and what happens next.

They are free, need no login and work on a phone. You can share a link to a result, save a page as a PDF or add a deadline to your own calendar. None of them replaces advice on your own facts: when a decision matters, speak to a lawyer.

What each tool does

Pick the tool for the job

Doing Business in Bangladesh 2026

The investor guide covers fourteen topics in one place: why Bangladesh, the entry routes (subsidiary, branch, liaison office, joint venture and the zones), company set-up at the RJSC, the foreign investment rules administered by Invest Bangladesh, foreign exchange and repatriation, tax, employment and work permits, land, economic zones and EPZs, intellectual property, data protection, competition, contracts and disputes, and anti-corruption.

Each chapter opens with key points and cites the law, and the whole guide can be saved as a PDF.

Best for boards, general counsel and investment teams deciding whether and how to enter Bangladesh, and for advisers who need one reliable reference for a client.

Bangladesh Legal Outlook 2027

The Outlook sets out what changed in Bangladesh law in 2025 and 2026, what is scheduled and what to watch in 2027, in eleven chapters from investment and LDC graduation to tax, banking, courts, data, employment, energy, land, compliance and private clients.

It ends with a month-by-month 2027 calendar and a ten-point checklist for the board, and can be saved as a PDF.

Best for boards, general counsel and investors planning for 2027.

Deadline Calculator

The calculator covers eighty-two time limits under the Limitation Act 1908, the procedure codes and special laws.

Choose the suit, appeal, revision or complaint, enter the date time started to run, and it gives the last day, excludes the time taken to obtain a certified copy where the law allows, warns when the last day falls on a weekend or public holiday, and adds the deadline to your calendar with reminders.

Best for litigants, in-house teams and anyone with a judgment, order or claim and a deadline to meet.

International Desks

Eight country desks explain the Bangladesh law that matters most to clients in each country: the investment and tax treaties, how that country's judgments and arbitral awards are treated in Bangladesh, how to sign documents there for use in Bangladesh, and the questions its clients ask most.

Best for companies, lenders and families in the UK, US, UAE, Saudi Arabia, China, India, Singapore and Japan.

Approvals Navigator

The navigator asks how you will set up, where, in which sector, how much is foreign-owned, whether you will hire foreign staff, import or export, and build or occupy premises.

It then lists the registrations, licences and clearances that apply, grouped by stage and in the order you will need them, with the authority, the law, the documents, an indicative time, any verified fee and the official portal. Your answers are saved in the link so you can share the result.

Best for project teams and in-house lawyers building a licensing plan and timeline, and for anyone comparing locations such as an export processing zone, an economic zone or an ordinary site.

Regulatory Horizon Tracker

The tracker lists the significant changes to Bangladesh law since January 2025: Acts passed by Parliament, ordinances and whether they became Acts or lapsed, rules, Bangladesh Bank circulars, drafts and consultations. Each entry shows its status, the date it took effect, who is affected and what to do, and links to the source. A month-by-month chart shows when change happened.

Best for compliance, legal and government-affairs teams who need to know what changed, when it took effect and whether a draft has become law.

NRB Country Desk

The country desk covers twenty-five countries where Bangladeshis live, work and invest.

For each it explains how to sign a power of attorney for use in Bangladesh, whether an apostille is accepted or legalisation is still needed, how that country's certificates, judgments and arbitral awards are used in Bangladesh, whether there is a tax treaty, and which Bangladesh missions to contact.

Best for Bangladeshis living abroad, their families and foreign companies who need documents signed outside Bangladesh to be accepted at home.

Compliance Calendar

The calendar lists the recurring statutory deadlines for a business in Bangladesh: the AGM and RJSC filings, income tax and withholding returns, VAT returns, advance tax, payroll and labour obligations, licence renewals and listed-company reporting. Each entry gives the rule, the law and the penalty, and any deadline can be added to Google, Outlook or Apple Calendar with a reminder.

Best for company secretaries, finance and HR teams who want every recurring filing in their own calendar with a reminder.

Dawn Raids & Inspections

The raids guide covers ten authorities, from the tax and customs authorities to the Anti-Corruption Commission, the financial intelligence unit, the police, labour and environment inspectors, consumer protection and mobile courts. For each it explains the legal power and its limits, whether a warrant is needed, what to do and not do, your rights and how to challenge what happens.

Best for reception staff, site managers and in-house lawyers who need to know what to do in the first minutes of an unannounced visit.

Bangla–English Legal Glossary

Land, court, tax and family terms explained in plain English, with Bangla script and the law.

Case Journeys

The Case Journeys animate how eighty-eight types of case move through the courts of Bangladesh, from the first office or police station to the Appellate Division, with every step, document, time limit and route of appeal, revision, review, reference and remand.

Best for litigants and families who want to understand where a case stands, what happens next and how long it may take.

Dhaka Court Guide

The court guide maps the Supreme Court campus and the courts of Old Dhaka building by building and floor by floor, with sixty-nine places, twenty walk-throughs of real errands and the meaning of the words you will hear there.

Best for anyone going to court in Dhaka for the first time, and for clients abroad who want to understand what their lawyer is doing there.
