Regulation of advocates in Bangladesh

Advocates in Bangladesh are enrolled with, and regulated by, the Bangladesh Bar Council, a statutory body established under the Bangladesh Legal Practitioners and Bar Council Order 1972 (President's Order No. 46 of 1972). The Bar Council admits advocates to practise, sets standards of professional conduct and has disciplinary jurisdiction over its members.

Our advocates are bound by the Bar Council's Canons of Professional Conduct and Etiquette, which cover, among other things, duties to clients, conflicts of interest, conduct towards courts and colleagues, and acting against former clients where confidential information was obtained. You can find more about the Bar Council at barcouncil.gov.bd.

Barristers

In Bangladesh, the title "Barrister" usually means that the lawyer has been called to the Bar in England and Wales or another common-law jurisdiction. A call to the Bar outside Bangladesh does not by itself give a right to practise in Bangladesh. To practise in Bangladesh, a lawyer must be enrolled as an advocate with the Bangladesh Bar Council.

Unless we state otherwise in writing, we do not hold ourselves out as practising the law of any jurisdiction other than Bangladesh. Where a matter involves foreign law, we work with, or recommend, lawyers qualified in that jurisdiction.

Professional standards and how we present ourselves

The Canons of Professional Conduct and Etiquette provide that an advocate shall not solicit professional employment by advertisement or by any other means, and shall not employ or pay another person to solicit or obtain professional employment. Our website is intended to provide information about the firm and general legal information to the public. It is not an invitation to any particular person to instruct us.

We publish third-party recognition only where it is accurate. The Legal 500 ranks TRW & Co in Tier 3 for Dispute resolution in Bangladesh. Rankings reflect the publisher's own research and are not a guarantee of any outcome.

No lawyer-client relationship

Reading this website, using our tools, sending us an enquiry, signing up for our newsletter or booking a consultation does not create a lawyer-client relationship. That relationship begins only when we have completed conflict checks and confirmed in writing that we will act for you.

Please do not send confidential information until we have confirmed that we can act. Protection under sections 126 to 129 of the Evidence Act 1872 for communications with an advocate depends on the circumstances, and an unsolicited message sent before any engagement may not be treated in the same way as communications made in the course of an engagement.

Content is general information, not advice

Our articles, guides, tools, case journeys, glossaries and translations are general information about law and practice, current at the date shown on each page. They are not legal advice, may not reflect later changes, and may not apply to your circumstances.

Legislation, court rules, fees and official procedures in Bangladesh change regularly. Always take advice on your specific situation before acting, and check the current official text of any law or schedule referred to.

Governing law and jurisdiction

This website and this notice are governed by the laws of Bangladesh, and the courts at Dhaka, Bangladesh, have jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them, without affecting any mandatory protection you have under the law of the country where you live.

Our engagement terms with clients set out the governing law and dispute-resolution arrangements for legal services.

Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by law, TRW & Co, its partners and staff accept no liability for any loss arising from reliance on information on this website, from errors or omissions in it, or from the site being unavailable. Nothing in this notice excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Our responsibility to clients for legal services is set out in the terms of each engagement.
