Overview

How the UK student visa works for Bangladeshi applicants

The UK student visa allows people aged 16 or over to study at a licensed sponsor, usually a university or college, and the Child Student route covers children aged 4 to 17 at independent fee-paying schools. Bangladesh sends many students to the UK, and refusals often stem from avoidable problems with funds, documents or credibility rather than eligibility. TRW & Co is a Bangladesh firm: we work with UK-regulated immigration advisers, registered with the OISC or regulated by the SRA, who give UK immigration advice and submit applications, while our private client lawyers in Bangladesh handle the Bangladeshi side.

Every application starts with a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies issued by the sponsor. The CAS records the course, fees, any amount already paid and the evidence the sponsor relied on, so its details must match the application exactly. Applicants outside the UK can usually apply up to six months before the course starts. Degree-level students need English at CEFR level B2, and lower-level courses need B1, assessed by an approved test or, for some universities, by the sponsor. Residents of Bangladesh also need a tuberculosis test certificate from an approved clinic, and some science subjects require ATAS clearance.

Funds cause the most difficulty. Applicants show the first year's unpaid course fees plus living costs for up to nine months. For applications made before 30 November 2026 the monthly figures are £1,529 in London and £1,171 elsewhere; for applications from that date they rise to £1,570 and £1,203. Money must normally be held for 28 consecutive days, with the closing balance dated within 31 days of applying. Child Student amounts depend on whether the child boards, lives with a parent or lives with a foster carer, so each UK student visa or Child Student case is calculated individually.

Rules on family members have tightened. Since January 2024 most students can no longer bring dependants: only those on postgraduate research courses, such as doctorates, and certain government-sponsored students on longer courses remain eligible. The Graduate route currently allows two years of post-study work, but the UK government has confirmed it will be reduced to eighteen months for applications from January 2027. Tougher compliance thresholds for sponsors have led some universities to limit recruitment from Bangladesh, and credibility interviews are common. Each UK student visa plan therefore needs current information, which we check with our UK advisers.

Our role in each UK student visa matter is practical and Bangladesh-focused, and complements the work of the UK adviser. We review bank statements, education loans and fixed deposits, explain where funds came from, and check that remittances of tuition and living costs comply with Bangladesh Bank foreign exchange rules through authorised dealer banks. For children, we prepare parental consent, guardianship and custody documents, including where parents are separated or one parent lives abroad. Where a family dispute affects consent, our dispute resolution lawyers can act. To start, contact our Dhaka office.

01

Route and timing review

We review the student's age, course, sponsor, previous UK applications and family position, and identify whether the Student or Child Student route applies. With our UK-regulated advisers, we set a realistic timetable working back from the course start date, covering CAS, English tests, the tuberculosis test, financial evidence and the visa application centre appointment in Dhaka. Starting late is the most common cause of avoidable stress.

02

Financial evidence and source of funds

We review bank statements, fixed deposit records, education loan letters and sponsor letters from Bangladeshi banks and institutions, checking that balances, dates and account holders meet the UK rules. Where large sums were recently deposited, we help families document the source, such as registered land sale deeds, business income or salary, so that the funds stand up to scrutiny at a credibility interview. Our review covers every UK student visa statement before submission.

03

Parental and family documents

When parents' funds are used, the student must show the relationship and the parents' consent. We prepare birth registration, name-consistent family records, consent letters and affidavits, and check that the documents agree with passports and the CAS. For separated, divorced or overseas parents, we advise on who can consent and gather the relevant court orders or custody documents needed. Accurate family papers prevent many UK student visa problems.

04

Child Student and guardianship

For children at UK independent schools, we prepare the parental consent required for travel, residence and care arrangements, review guardianship and foster arrangements, and advise on the Parent of a Child Student route for a parent accompanying a younger child. Where custody is disputed in Bangladesh, we advise on obtaining the court's permission before the child travels. We also advise parents on school fee contracts and the child's affairs at home.

05

Remittance and banking compliance

Paying tuition deposits, accommodation and living costs from Bangladesh must go through authorised dealer banks under Bangladesh Bank rules. We explain the supporting documents banks typically ask for, the limits and reporting that may apply, and how to structure payments so that the evidence shown to the UK sponsor and the Home Office matches the Bangladeshi banking record exactly. A matching paper trail supports the UK student visa file at every stage.

06

Refusals and reapplications

After a refusal, we review the decision with our UK-regulated advisers to identify whether administrative review is available for a caseworking error, or whether a fresh application with better evidence is the right course. We gather any missing Bangladeshi documents, address any credibility concerns honestly, and help the family understand the consequences for future UK student visa applications. We never encourage anyone to withhold a past refusal from a new application.

How much money do I need for a UK student visa?

You need the unpaid balance of the first year's course fees shown on your CAS, plus living costs for up to nine months. For applications before 30 November 2026, that is £1,529 a month in London and £1,171 a month elsewhere; for applications on or after that date, £1,570 and £1,203. Payments already made to the university for fees or university accommodation may be deducted, within limits. Funds must normally be held for 28 consecutive days. We help families calculate the exact figure for a UK student visa and check every statement against it before submission.

02

Can my parents' bank account be used for a UK student visa?

Yes. Funds held by a parent or legal guardian can be used, provided you show the relationship, usually with a birth certificate, and provide a letter of consent from the parent confirming the money is available for your studies. Names must match across the birth certificate, passports and bank records, which is often a problem with Bangladeshi documents. Funds held by uncles, siblings or family businesses generally cannot be counted. We review the family's documents, prepare consent letters and explain any spelling differences before the application is submitted.

03

Can I bring my spouse or children on a UK student visa?

In most cases, no longer. Since January 2024, dependants can be brought only by students on postgraduate research courses, such as PhDs and other research doctorates, and by certain government-sponsored students on courses lasting more than six months. A taught master's course no longer qualifies, even for a long course. Married students should plan carefully, and a spouse who wishes to come to the UK will need a separate route of their own. We advise families on these UK student visa choices with UK-regulated advisers, and on Bangladeshi family law issues the decision may raise.

04

Who can apply as a Child Student?

The Child Student route is for children aged 4 to 17 who have a place at an independent fee-paying school in the UK sponsored by a licensed sponsor. Children aged 16 or 17 may choose either the Child Student route or the main UK student visa route, depending on the course. The application needs written consent from both parents or the legal guardian, details of care arrangements and evidence of funds. Where a child lives with a foster carer or close relative rather than a parent, extra documents are required. We prepare the Bangladeshi consent and family evidence.

05

Can a parent go with a young child studying in the UK?

One parent of a child aged 4 to 11 at an independent school can apply on the Parent of a Child Student route. The parent must show they can support themselves and the child without public funds and must maintain a main home outside the UK, and the route does not allow them to work or bring other children as of right. Only one parent can hold this status at any one time. We help families decide realistically whether the route suits them and prepare the Bangladeshi evidence of the home and finances that the application requires.

06

Why are UK student visa applications from Bangladesh refused?

Common reasons include funds held for less than the required period, statements that do not meet the format rules, unexplained large deposits, inconsistencies between the CAS and the application, and answers at a credibility interview that suggest the applicant is not a genuine student. Previous refusals for other countries, gaps in study and courses unrelated to earlier education also attract scrutiny. Many of these issues can be anticipated well in advance. We review the full file before submission, prepare students for interview questions about their course and plans, and help them answer honestly and clearly.

07

Can I work while studying in the UK?

Degree-level students at a university are normally allowed to work up to 20 hours a week during term time and full-time during official vacations, and students below degree level are usually limited to 10 hours. Some work is prohibited entirely, including self-employment and professional sport. Child Students aged 16 or over have more limited rights. Students should not plan to finance their studies through work, because the UK student visa funds must be shown in advance. Breaching work conditions can lead to cancellation and affect future applications.

08

What happens after my UK student visa course ends?

Students who complete an eligible degree may apply for the Graduate route, which currently allows two years of post-study work, or three years for doctoral graduates. For applications made from January 2027, the standard period will fall to eighteen months. Others may switch to the Skilled Worker route if they have a qualifying job offer, subject to rules on switching before course completion. Students who do not switch must leave before their permission expires. We help graduates plan the next step with our UK advisers and with Bangladeshi employment and property matters at home.

How a matter runs

From first call to resolution.

  1. 01

    Initial family review

At the start, we review the course, CAS timing, previous applications, family structure and the funds available, and agree the route and timetable with our UK-regulated immigration advisers, who give the UK immigration advice. Each UK student visa plan starts here.

  2. 02

    Prepare the evidence

We assemble bank statements, loan letters, source of funds records, birth registration, consent letters and guardianship documents, checking every name, date and figure against the CAS and the UK rules. Gaps are identified and fixed early, not at the last minute.

  3. 03

    Submit and attend

The UK adviser finalises and submits the application. We help with the tuberculosis test, biometric appointment in Dhaka and preparation for any credibility interview, and keep the whole family informed throughout. Biometric appointments are booked as early as possible.

  4. 04

    Decision and travel

On approval, we advise on the eVisa, travel, remittances for living costs and arrangements at home. If refused, we review options promptly, including administrative review or a stronger fresh application. Our support continues while the student settles in.

“Demonstrates an extraordinary command over both domestic litigation and international arbitration.”

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Still unsure? Email info@trw.co with a short outline of the matter.

Does TRW & Co submit UK student visa applications?
No. TRW & Co is a Bangladesh law firm and does not itself give regulated UK immigration advice. We work with UK-regulated immigration advisers, registered with the OISC or regulated by the SRA, who advise on UK immigration law and submit applications. For each UK student visa, we prepare and review the Bangladeshi financial, family and legal documents, explain each stage of the process to the family, and coordinate the matter from Dhaka so that everything arrives on time and consistently.
Can an education loan from a Bangladeshi bank support a UK student visa?
Yes, an education loan can be used if it is provided by a government, a government-sponsored scheme or a regulated financial institution, and the loan letter meets the format requirements, including the amount, the student's name and confirmation that funds will be available before or on arrival. Some Bangladeshi bank letters omit one or more required details. We check the letter against the rules and ask the bank to correct it before the application is made. Loan disbursement terms and timing should also be confirmed with the bank early.
Do I need a tuberculosis test from Bangladesh?
Yes. Applicants resident in Bangladesh who are coming to the UK for more than six months must provide a tuberculosis test certificate from a clinic approved by the Home Office. The certificate is valid for a limited period, so the test should be timed with the application. Children under a certain age may be assessed differently. We build the test into the timetable and remind families of the clinic booking. The requirement applies to Student and Child Student applicants alike.
What is a UK student visa credibility interview?
The Home Office or the university may interview applicants to check that they are genuine students: why they chose the course and institution, how it fits their previous studies and career plans, how they will fund their stay and what they intend to do afterwards. Answers should be honest, specific and consistent with the documents. We help each student prepare by reviewing their history and practising likely questions, without scripting answers that would sound rehearsed. Most students find that this practice helps their confidence considerably.
Is there an appeal if my UK student visa is refused?
There is generally no right of appeal against a refusal of a UK student visa. Where the refusal resulted from a caseworking error, administrative review may be available within a short deadline. Otherwise, the usual remedy is a fresh application addressing the reasons for refusal. Simply repeating the same evidence rarely works. We review the refusal with our UK advisers, identify what must change and help gather stronger Bangladeshi evidence. Timing matters, as review deadlines are short.
How should tuition be paid from Bangladesh?
Payments for overseas education are made through authorised dealer banks in Bangladesh under Bangladesh Bank foreign exchange rules, usually on the basis of the offer letter or CAS and other supporting documents. Paying through informal channels or third parties creates problems both in Bangladesh and with the UK sponsor, which needs a clear payment record. We explain the documents banks typically request and help families keep a consistent record for the UK student visa file. Keeping receipts and bank advices together saves time later in the course.
My child's parents are divorced. Who must consent?
For a Child Student application, the Home Office generally expects consent from both parents or from the parent with sole legal responsibility. Under Bangladeshi law, custody and guardianship may be held by different people, and a court order may be needed if one parent refuses or cannot be found. We review the divorce or talaq papers and any custody orders, and where necessary apply to the Family Court for permission before the child travels. Court applications can take time, so it should begin early.
How do we start?
Contact our Dhaka office with the student's age, course and offer details, previous visa history and an outline of how studies will be funded. We arrange an initial consultation, give a view on the Bangladeshi documents required and likely issues, and agree scope and fees in writing. We then introduce a UK-regulated immigration adviser and coordinate the UK student visa application with them from start to finish. Early contact, ideally before the CAS is issued, gives the most options.
