76 insights in this field

As regulatory lawyers in Bangladesh, we advise on sector licensing, import and export registration, customs classification and valuation, VAT and supplementary duty under the Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duty Act 2012, corporate tax and transfer pricing, and investigations and enforcement by regulators.

We also advise on competition law before the Bangladesh Competition Commission and on trade agreements, preferences and market access as Bangladesh graduates from least developed country status, helping exporters and investors plan for the changes in tariffs, rules of origin and support measures.

What licences does a new business need in Bangladesh?
Most businesses need a trade licence, tax and VAT registration and, depending on activity, import or export registration and sector licences. We map the full list for the specific business before operations start.
How are customs disputes resolved in Bangladesh?
Disputes over classification or valuation can be raised with the customs authority, taken on appeal within the revenue system and, where a point of law arises, brought before the High Court Division. Early documentation is decisive.
What does LDC graduation mean for exporters?
Graduation from least developed country status will change some trade preferences and support measures. Exporters should review tariff exposure, rules of origin and contracts so that the transition is planned rather than sudden.
Does Bangladesh have a competition law?
Yes. The Competition Act 2012 prohibits anti-competitive agreements and abuse of dominance and is enforced by the Bangladesh Competition Commission. Distribution and pricing arrangements should be reviewed against it.
Can regulatory lawyers in Bangladesh help with tax audits?
Yes. We advise on income tax and VAT audits, prepare responses and evidence, negotiate with the authorities and take appeals or High Court proceedings where an assessment is wrong.
